Sustainability

Stay Green...at Goldsmith Primary Academy

At Goldsmith Primary Academy, we believe in our shared responsibility to “leave the world a little bit better than we found it.” Sustainability isn’t an initiative — it’s a mindset that runs through everything we do. From how we teach and learn to how we power and care for our site, we are committed to protecting our planet and preparing our pupils to do the same.

Our Eco-Conscious Campus

We are proud to have invested in a range of sustainable initiatives across our site, including solar panels, heat-insulating windows, and electric car charging facilities. These improvements make our school more energy efficient and environmentally responsible, reducing our carbon footprint and supporting a greener future for our community.

Technology for a Greener Tomorrow

As an Apple Distinguished School, we harness technology to support both learning and sustainability. Our 1:1 iPad programme has significantly reduced the school’s use of paper and printing, replacing traditional methods with digital collaboration and feedback through Showbie. iPads themselves are sustainably produced and recycled, aligning with our ethos of innovation with purpose.

Learning Through Action

Our pupils are at the heart of our sustainability mission. Our dedicated team of Eco Warriors lead by example, helping to ensure we reduce waste, recycle effectively, and act responsibly. Across the school, pupils take part in growing their own food — which is then enjoyed in the canteen — learning about sustainability, healthy eating, and the value of local produce.

Community and Collaboration

Sustainability at Goldsmith extends beyond our gates. We are proud recipients of Beacon School Status, recognising our leadership in environmental action. Through initiatives such as litter picking, volunteering at Goscote Community Gardens, and our Community Orchard Project, pupils actively contribute to improving their local environment.

We also work closely with Professor Gatrad OBE and the WASUP (Walsall Against Single Use Plastic) campaign. Together, we’ve hosted inspiring assemblies, performed an original play written by our former Head of School, Mr Ingles. We are developing a WASUP garden in the forest to promote lasting change.

Sustainability in Learning and Life

Sustainability is embedded across our curriculum and daily life — from eco-friendly digital learning to participation in events such as the WAT COP Conference, Sustainability Summit, and our popular Sustainability Swap Shop. Pupils also learn responsibility through road safety sessions, Bikeability training, and the A*STARS Sheriff programme, building a deep understanding of how small actions create big change.

Growing for the Future

Our school allotment and initiatives like the Spuds, Spuds and More Spuds! competition connect children with nature and food production. These experiences build curiosity, resilience, and pride in caring for the environment.

At Goldsmith, sustainability is a shared journey — one that unites pupils, staff, and the wider community. Every decision, from how we power our school to how we learn, is guided by our mission to leave the world a little bit better than we found it.
