At Goldsmith, we are scientists...

At Goldsmith, we are scientists. Our curriculum nurtures curiosity, enquiry and critical thinking, enabling every child to question, explore and explain the world around them. Through a highly practical and investigative approach—anchored in the WAT 5Es model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate)—pupils learn to think and work scientifically across the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science is taught as a core subject with hands-on enquiry at its heart, encouraging pupils to test ideas, analyse data and communicate findings with increasing precision. Our curriculum builds systematically from EYFS ‘Understanding the World’, ensuring that foundational concepts are introduced through play and exploration before being developed through structured investigation.

The Ogden Trust: strengthening physics education for all young people in England.Science at Goldsmith goes beyond the National Curriculum. As a partner school of The Ogden Trust, we are committed to improving access to physics and have introduced magnetism in Year 1 and Earth and Space in Year 2, bridging early experiences from EYFS with later KS2 learning. Across the school, pupils are explicitly taught and revisited on Working Scientifically skills, supported by a progressive Science Language Continuum that strengthens vocabulary and conceptual understanding. Teachers assess through AfL and end-of-unit investigations, using outcomes to inform SMART Start revisits and future planning. Our inclusive, practical approach ensures every pupil—regardless of background or need—can engage with scientific enquiry, develop a lifelong curiosity for the subject, and see themselves as confident, capable scientists.
