At Goldsmith, we are linguists...

At Goldsmith Primary Academy, we are linguists and global citizens. Our Spanish curriculum, taught through Kapow Primary Languages, immerses pupils in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages while deepening their understanding of global culture. Starting in Year 2, pupils are introduced to Spanish through song, developing confidence with pronunciation, rhythm and vocabulary. From Years 3 to 6, pupils progressively develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through structured units such as Greetings, Spanish Food and Drink, and A Trip Across Spain. By the end of Year 6, pupils can communicate with increasing accuracy and fluency, ready to continue their Spanish journey at secondary school. The curriculum promotes curiosity, cultural appreciation and communication, reflecting Goldsmith’s inclusive ethos and commitment to preparing pupils for an interconnected world.

Spanish is taught weekly across Year 2 and KS2, following a clear progression model that builds confidence and challenge year on year. Lessons follow the I do, We do, You do structure, combining teacher-led modelling with native-speaker audio, repetition, games and music to reinforce pronunciation and intonation. Pupils have access to knowledge organisers, visual scaffolds and talking tins, ensuring accessibility for all learners, including those with SEND or EAL. Assessment for Learning, peer reflection and end-of-unit quizzes are used to track progress and celebrate achievement. As a result, pupils leave Goldsmith as confident, respectful communicators who can understand and express themselves in Spanish, demonstrating linguistic fluency, cultural awareness and a love of languages.
